Travel Insurance Fine Print : The Real Deal

December 31st, 2007

Many of us will be planning our winter and spring break vacations over the next few weeks and if you're taking a flight out of town, you may be considering travel insurance just to make sure your bases are covered.

But a lot of those policies are packed with exclusions.  We’ve got The Real Deal on how the pages and pages of fine print leave some travelers beyond frustrated.

Romona and Donald Foran booked a flight online to spend the holidays with their daughter in Tennessee.

Right along with tickets, they purchased travel insurance.

They bought it in case anything happened, and something did.  A few days before they were supposed to fly out, Donald had a bad reaction to a new medication he was on.  He couldn't get in to see the doctor before his flight, so the couple decided to cancel and spend Christmas at home

They called the insurance company and got all the paperwork to fill out, and a lot of personal information was required.

“They wanted to know the last 5 visits that my husband had made to the doctor, what they were for, the dates, the whole 9 yards.”

In the fine print of this and most policies, you'll see there are a number of hoops you have to jump through to have a successful claim.

First, in most cases it has to be your physician, not you, who decides you can't fly.  That's why Donald's claim was rejected.

The insurance company also has the right to examine you "as often as reasonably needed while a claim is pending.”

And if you cancel because of a death in the family, the company may require both a death certificate and autopsy.

“I think we were naïve, we just thought we bought insurance and if something happened we'd be safe, we'd just call ‘em and they'd give us our money back,” Donald said
