Saga: Travel insurance denied to older people

Fri 18th Oct 2007

Saga has claimed that many insurers do not permit people over the age of 65 to purchase continued travel insurance.

Lisa Harris, group communications manager at Saga Personal Finance, said that over-65s may have problems finding an insurer, because they have an age-related cut-off point.

"Unfortunately, many providers have an arbitrary cut-off age on travel insurance which totally disregards the individual's health," she remarked.

She also explained that older people may find it easier to purchase travel insurance for a single trip than annual insurance.

"Insurers that have little experience of looking after older travellers are less inclined to provide insurance for a whole year, as they believe that an individual's health could change dramatically over the period," Ms Harris added.

Data provided by Age Concern reveals that 92 per cent of travel insurance policies have upper age limits and will not provide cover for those who are older than the limit.
